528,601. Cigarette-making and like machines. MOLINS. D. W., and MOLINS MACHINE CO.. Ltd. May 10, 1939, No. 13958. Addition to 514,162. [Class 130] [Also in Group XVII] In apparatus for forming a continuous tobacco rod or filler, as claimed in the parent Specification, at least one of the top walls or the side wall of the confining passage 10 is arranged to yield under excessive pressure built up by the tobacco when an obstruction occurs, and control guides 100 on the entrance side of the passage are arranged to provide a compressed stream of tobacco, in the event of a jam occurring, at a smaller cross-sectional area than that of the confining passage, in order to maintain sufficient pressure to move a yieldable wall and allow the tobacco to escape. As shown, tobacco on the conveyer 6 passes beneath a rotatable wheel 91 and a compressing shoe 90 which may be given a rapid vibration of small amplitude. From the conveyer 6, the tobacco is fed between converging guides 24 and over a bridge piece 16 to the confining passage 10, from the outlet of which it is fed by a second conveyer 11 moving more slowly than the conveyer 6. The conveyer 11 may be a paper web carried by an endless band 13. The top and side walls of the confining passage 10 are formed by a grooved member 101, Figs. 1 and 3, pivoted at 102 and adapted to be lifted by excessive pressure. The control guides 100, Figs. 1 and 4, are supported by the shoe 90 between the guides 24 and may diverge slightly in the direction of movement of the tobacco stream.
