530,532. Lining pipe sockets. CLAYTON, GOODFELLOW & CO., Ltd., HARRISON, W. S., and BARTON, A. June 21, 1939. No. 18052. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] A tool for use in lining the socket ends of earthenware and like pipes with bitumen or other mouldable material comprises a core having retractable members which when projected both centralize the core in the socket and form recesses in the liner during the moulding thereof, and when retracted permit withdrawal of the tool from the lined socket. As shown in Fig. 1, the tool comprises a circular base plate 1 provided with an axial shaft 2 and a slightly conical upwardly projecting flange 3 around the outer edge. The flange is provided on its outer periphery with three equally-spaced recesses 4, a radiably-slidable member 5 guided by a ring 6 let into the base 1 being provided beneath each recess. The members 5 are connected by bellcrank levers 7 to a sleeve 8 slidable on the shaft 2. In use, the tool is grasped by the sleeve 8, the weight of the parts causing the members 5 to be retracted, and is inserted into the socket. The sleeve 8 is then moved relatively to the shaft 2 to project the members 5 until they meet the wall of the socket, whereby the tool is automatically centred..The bitumen or like material is then poured into the space between the flange 3 and the socket wall, the material also flowing into the recesses 4. When the material has set the members 5 are retracted and the tool withdrawn. - The resulting formation of the lining includes cavities 10, Fig. 5, corresponding to the members 5, and ribs 11, corresponding to the recesses 4. The ribs 11 serve as approximate centering means for the inserted pipe end 12, and the cavities 10 serve as keying means for the further jointing material poured between the interengaging pipe ends. In a modification, the members 5 each carry an upstanding pin engaging a cam groove in a rotatable disc overlying the base 1. In a further modification, the recesses 4 are provided elsewhere than over the members 5, the flange 3 being provided with a raised ridge above each member 5 to form a groove giving access to the cavity formed by the member.
