[Class 72] Fine particles of abraded iron are removed from waste sand slurry by causing the slurry to flow below the surface of a horizontal revolving magnetic drum at a linear rate approximating the rate of travel of the surface of the drum and subjecting the slurry to an intense magnetic field in the zone where the surface of the drum passes out of the slurry. Contained in a drum 22 are poles 16 secured to a block 17 of non-magnetic material mounted on a shaft 13 fixedly supported in bearings in brackets 11 on a base plate 10. The drum 22 is provided with bearings 23 rotated by a belt 34 on the shaft 13 and end discs 24 secured on these bearings 23 and projecting beyond the surface of the drum to provide a channel in which is disposed a winding 26 consisting of a single layer of wire. The slurry is fed from a hopper 35 down a shoot 36 provided with a bend 37 and on to the drum 22. The slurry passes into the reservoir 43 in a trough 41 thence into an arcuate trough 45, in which the drum 22 rotates and thence into a discharge trough 46 formed integrally with the trough 45 and provided with a weir or dam 47. The trough 41 is adjustably mounted on screws 42 to obtain a passage between the bottom of the trough 45 and the drum 22 so that the rate of travel of the fluid corresponds to the rate of the travel of the surface of the drum 22. The trough 45 is formed by an apron extending from the wall 44 of the tank 41 and provided with skirts 45a resting in the bottom of the tank.
