[Class 27] In the type of price-charge mechanism for meters having a stepped gear wheel engaged by a toothed wheel which moves both axially and angularly to engage the different wheels in the stepped formation, the movable toothed wheel is carried by an axially and longitudinally moving setting lever co-operating with a fixed stepped supporting member or stop to ensure correct mesh of each set for engaging gears; the movement of the lever being controlled by a helical spring which resists the longitudinal movement by compression and the angular movement by torsion. Thus in Fig. 3 the stop blocks I, II prevent the levers 14, 14' moving both angularly and axially in one direction under the influence of the springs 61, Fig. 1. Correct engagement between the wheel 10 and any one of the stepped wheels 3 ... 9 is thus ensured. The two arms 10, 10SP1/SP shown engaging the opposite sides of the stepped gear are for settings of the value of one penny and one eighth of a penny respectively. These two arms are coupled through gearing to the sun wheels 35, 36 respectively of a differential gear of which the planet wheel shaft is connected through gearing to the quantity mechanism.
