541,963. Oil engines. ROWLEDGE, A. J. April 24, 1940, No. 7414. [Class 7 (iii)] A fuel-injection engine in which the charge of air or fuel, or both, are given a swirling motion has the combustion chamber of cylindrical form and the injector so arranged that the fuel particles become driven towards the periphery owing to centrifugal action, the spark plugs being arranged at or near such periphery. Fig. 1 shows a two-stroke engine having a sleeve valve controlling exhaust ports 14 and inlet passages 15 which are tangentially arranged to give the air a swirling movement, spark plugs 20, 21 being arranged at the periphery of the cylindrical combustion chamber which is bounded by the flat cylinder bead and the flat top of the piston. Tne wall of the combustion chamber may be conical as shown, and the spark plugs may be arranged at different radial distances from the cylinder axis.
