In the formula R, RSP1/SP and RSP11/SP indicate the same or different alkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups, X is halogen and n is 1 or 2. In examples (1) crotonic acid betaine chloride is warmed on a water bath with thionyl chloride. (2) Crotonic acid betaine chloride is treated with thionyl chloride at 35‹ C.
