[Class 1 (i)] Endothermic and exothermic reactions are conducted respectively in separate zones A, B, each provided with a heat-exchange medium circulated for example through tubes 1 and headers 4, 5, and the media are commingled or otherwise brought into heat exchange through a part 13 common to their respective circuits. After the heat exchange, a controllable portion of the medium may be extracted and cooled in a device 22, and afterwards returned to the appropriate circuit, while the medium returned to the other circuit may be heated by the burning of a combustible gas mixture supplied by pipes 17.
