PICT:0495524/IV/1 PICT:0495524/IV/2 In the method of producing viscose artificial silk in which the fibres after spinning and coagulation are treated with hot water, the volatile substances such as carbon disulphide and hydrogen sulphide which are eliminated during the treatment are recovered by carrying out the treatment in an apparatus comprising a closed container which contains the hot water and is provided with separate hydraulically closed inlet and outlet openings for the fibrous materials and an outlet for the escaping gases. The inlet point of the material is preferably treated with cold water, to avoid premature development of gas. A number of embodiments of the apparatus are described. Fig. 4 shows an apparatus suitable for treating the material in the form of continuous threads. The threads in the form of a band 13 enter the container 14 through a pipe 15, pass over driven rolls 21, 22 several times and leave through a pipe 18; cold water is supplied to the pipe 15 through inlet 11 and hot water is supplied to the container 14 through inlets 24,25; the water is discharged through an outlet 19 and the volatile substances escape through an outlet 16, being washed by the incoming water in the chamber 28 which is filled into balls or the like. Fig. 9 shows an apparatus suitable for treating the material in the form of cut fibres, and comprises two siphon - like containers forming together a channel in the form of the letter "W"; the fibres 13 are pumped through the apparatus by means of reciprocating pistons 31; cold water enters through the inlet 11, hot water enters through inlet 24 and hot water or steam through inlets 25.
