[Class 38 (iv)] Arc-suppression coils for high-voltage networks are maintained in a definite relation to resonance with the network constants by a measuring instrument responsive to a quantity indicative of complete resonance at a suitable frequency other than the network frequency. An asynchronous generator G excited from the network supplies the measuring frequency through a transformer T, furnishing the requisite loose coupling to points a, b in series with the suppression coil L1 and with the parallel connection of the network capacity and other suppression coils on the network. The measuring instrument k is connected between coil and star point and coupled to means such as a reversible motor adjusting the inductance of the coil. According to the main feature of the invention the network is provided with one automatically adjusted coil as near as possible to the " centre of gravity" of the network, disconnectable line sections each being provided with a fixed inductance corresponding to the capacity of the line section. Where the system is divisible into two or more main sections each of these may have a coil regulated automatically as above and in addition known means are provided to maintain the relative inductance of the coils required by the constants of the respective sections of the system.
