Fruit and vegetables are preserved by embedding in a mixture consisting of a dry moisture-absorbent, such as turf dust or lime, a heat and moisture insulating, non-water-absorbing powder, such as shells of diatomaceae, or prepared chalk, and a powdered antiseptic, such as flowers of sulphur, benzoic acid or resorcinol compounds. These latter may be the methyl ester or propylester of paraoxybenzoic acid or hexyl resorcinol.
