564,777. Peeling oranges &c. KELLIE, R. W., and KELLIE & SON, Ltd., R. May 26, 1943, No. 8413. [Class 28 (ii)] In a machine for skinning and pulping fruit for making marmalade &c., such as described in Specification 356,997, where the oranges are cut into quarters and pass between rollers such as 5, 6 and against a skin separating knife 7, the roller 5 which has recesses to receive the juice and pulp is driven by suitable gears at a greater speed than the roller 6 which has spikes to the skin and drag the fruit past the knife 7. In operation, each orange, placed in one of a number of stainless steel holders 32 (not shown) on conveyer chains, comes under a timed plunger 4 which presses it down against fixed quartering knives 3, from which pairs of adhering quarters are deflected to one or other of the pairs of rollers 5, 6, which, with the knife 7 separate skin from juice and pulp as above. The juice and pulp removed by scrapers drop into the hopper 33 of a motor driven mincing machine 34. The nip of the rollers is adjusted by a handle 6b adjusting the eccentric bearing of the spiked roller 6. The knife 7 is positioned to bisect the space between the roller 5 and the circle containing the tips of the spikes. Each knife 7 is adjustably clamped by a piece 20 surmounted by a deflector 24, both forming a smooth streamlined contour to direct the skin over and behind the knife. A screw 21 adjusts the knife towards the nip of the rollers.
