[Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A burnishing or polishing tool for use with a boring bar, or with a tool post for external turning, comprises a diamond, or other hard mineral or hard metal tip 8 ground to the form of a portion of a spheroid, ellipsoid, or oval, subtended by an angle of approximately 90 degrees and mounted in a holder or bit 3. The bit 3 is mounted rotatably in a hole 2 in a boring bar 1 with its axis at an angle, which may be about 15 degrees to the normal to the axis of the bar, and the bit is locked in adjusted position by a sleeve 5 and screw 7 ; boring tools 23, 24 are provided in the bar 1. The tip 8 thus makes point contact with the work, and a new point may be brought into operation by rotation of the bit; the bit may be pivotally mounted by means of a block, so that the axis of the bit may be set at a different angle, thus bringing the contact point onto another part of the tip. As applied to a tool for external work, the bit is mounted in a carrier 9 pivoted at 12 in a groove 11 in the tool block 10 and adjustable by screws 14, 15 ; the bit is held in adjusted rotational position by a set-screw 16 engaging recesses in the bit 3. A turning-tool 17 mounted in a bit 18 is provided, supported in a carrier 19 pivotally mounted in a recess 20 in the block 10, and adjustable by screws 21. Specification 458,194 is referred to.
