[Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XXX] In a furnace stoker comprising an underfed coking retort A arranged at the front end of a reciprocating or travelling chain grate B and fed with fuel from a hopper D through a trough C, the feeding device comprises a plate F reciprocated along the bottom of the trough C and serving to carry the fuel fed on to it from the hopper forwardly to the opening A3 of the retort A. The depth of fuel carried forward is regulated by a vertically adjustable plate G and means may be provided for regulating the extent to which the plate F is withdrawn after each feeding stroke. The retort A is surrounded by an air chamber A1 from which air, tapped from the main supply duct H, passes to the retort and to the fuel on the main grate B through apertures A2 , A4 respectively.
