[Class 83 (iii)] In an indexing device for milling &c. machines having a work-holder 6 rotatably adjusted in a housing 5 and carrying an index plate 8 provided with radial slots 10 for co-operating with a spring-pressed plunger 11, locking means are provided consisting of an internally screwed ring 13 secured to the housing and co-operating with a screwed ring 15 rotatable on the holder 6. A handle 16 is insertable in any one of a number of tapped holes 17 in the ring 15, the screwed connection being left-handed so that clockwise rotation of the handle as viewed in Fig. 2 with exert axial pressure on the plate 8 and a nut 31 on the holder to lock the latter against rotation, whilst anti-clockwise rotation will release the holder and then unlatch the plunger 11 through a cam lever 18 to permit the holder to be indexed. A chuck, adaptor, &c. may be secured to a flange 7 on the holder 6 which may have a tapered bore to receive the work or a centre, mandrel, &c.
