Artificial silk cords comprise filaments which have been produced from viscose containing a protein such as casein in a proportion not exceeding 1 per cent of the dry weight of the cellulose. The casein, either as a solution of sodium caseinate, or mixed with some viscose, is injected into a main current of viscose passing from a storage tank to the spinnerets. The cords may be bonded to rubber, e.g. in the manufacture of tyres. Specifications 290,693, [Class 2 (ii)], 433,777, [Group V], 467,500, 481,079, [Group V], 494,327, 527,170, and German Specification 178,985 are referred to.ALSO:Rubber is bonded during the vulcanization step to artificial silk cords which have been produced from viscose containing a protein such as casein in a proportion not exceeding 2 per cent. of the dry weight of the cellulose. A test sheet comprises a number of lengths of the casein-modified viscose rayon cords united to canvas by vulcanizing therebetween a rubber composition.
