574,083. Wheel tyres. SANDBERG, I. T. June 13, 1944, No. 11323. Convention date, May 31, 1943. [Class 144 (ii)] In a tread, for use on twin tyres, comprising a series of hinged plates 6, at least one of the plates is fitted with a rigid guide-member which extends between the tyres and is connected to the wheel hub by a chain 18. In the construction shown, the guide-member consists of curved arms 13 connected to a plate 12 which is bolted to the tread-plate 6 and slotted to permit lateral adjustment. The chain 18 is connected to the arms 13 through a link 17 which passes through an aperture 20 in the wheel-disc 5. To release the tread-band, in the event of the latter becoming ground-locked, a safety-link 21 is embodied in the chain 18. One end of this link is normally held by a relatively-weak pin 23 which is adapted to fracture when abnormal torque is set up between the wheel and the tread-band. The tread-plates may be fitted with transverse and circumferential strakes 10, 11, and wooden blocks may be fitted inside the tread-plates to adapt the device to a comparatively smaller tyre. The ends of the band are connected by a bolt 26 having a hooked end 25 engaging the hinge-socket on one end of the band, and an arm for engagement with a spring-catch 27 at the other end. In a modification (not shown), the chain 18 may be connected directly to the tread-plate.
