Preparation of chlorinated rubber and other chlorinated rubber-like materials and chlorinated rubber hydrochloride

Chlorinated rubber, chlorinated rubber-like materials and chlorinated rubber hydrochloride of improved colour and clarity and reduced tendency to discolour under the action of light and to gel in solution are prepared by drying the water-wet precipitated chlorinated material in contact with surfaces consisting essentially of nickel. Rubber, balata, gutta-percha, rubber hydrochloride, polymerized butadiene or chlorbutadiene, or a butylene polymer or a copolymer of butylene with butadiene is dissolved or dispersed in a medium which is preferably inert to chlorine such as carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, tetrachlorethane, benzene, toluene, chlorinated toluene or chlorinated benzene and treated with chlorine with or without the addition of air or oxygen. After removing excess chlorine and hydrochloric acid, the chlorinated material is precipitated with hot water, hexane, heptane or ethyl alcohol and then washed. The material is then dried, preferably under reduced pressure with a current of air passing through the mass, in a closed, nickel-lined vessel fitted with nickel stirrers, the jacketed walls of the vessel being kept at 50-130 DEG C.
