摘要
Resinous interpolymers are obtained from an ester derived from an acid of boron or silicon and an a : b -unsaturated primary alcohol with a polymerizable organic compound of the general formula FORM:0577456/IV/1 , wherein A is hydrogen, alkyl or a negative atom or group B is hydrogen, alkyl or a negative organic radicle, and one or both A and B is/are negative. Specified polymerizable compounds are: styrene, butadiene, chlor - 2 - butadiene, vinylchloride, methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, vinylpropionate, vinylthioacetate, ethylmethacrylate, cyclohexylmethacrylate, cyclohexylphenylmethacrylate, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, methacrylic acid, methacrylamide, methacrylicanilide, vinylbutyrate, N-alkyl methacrylamides, N-alkylacrylamides, vinylacrylate, ethylacrylate, butylmethacrylate, methylvinylketone, ethylvinylketone and butyl vinyl ether. In examples: (2) trimethallylborate is interpolymerized with methylmethacrylate, vinylacetate and methylacrylate in the presence of benzoylperoxide as catalyst; (1) trifurfurylborate is interpolymerized with methylmethacrylate; on heating the polymer in water, the borate present on the surface is hydrolysed; (5) tetramethallylsilicate is interpolymerized with methylmethacrylate; films formed on glass from the resulting mixture, after baking are insensitive to water; tetraallyl-, tetratiglyl- and tetracrotonyl-silicates may similarly be used; (6) a mixture of methylmethacrylate and tetramethallylsilicate containing benzoylperoxide is added to granular methylmethacrylate polymer; the mixture, on heating under pressure in a die gives a chip insoluble in organic solvents. A granular interpolymer is obtained from a mixture of methylmethacrylate, tetramethallylsilicate and benzoylperoxide by heating and stirring with an aqueous solution of neutralised interpolymer of methylmethacrylate and methacrylic acid. A solution of methoxyethylmethacrylate, tetramethallylsilicate and benzoylperoxide on polymerization gives a clear soft polymer which adheres strongly to glass and is swollen by toluene, dioxane and butylacetate. Allylalcohol, 3-chlorbutene-2-ol-1, hexadiene-2 : 4-ol-1, 3 : 7-dimethyl octadiene-2 : 7-ol-1 and propargyl alcohol are specified alcohols which may be used for the preparation of the esters, which may be effected by reaction of the alcohol with an ester derived from orthosilicic or orthoboric acid and a more volatile alcohol. The use of diluents in the polymerization is optional as well as the use of catalysts such as ozone, dibutyrylperoxide, perphthalic acid, peracetic acid succinyl and lauryl peroxide. Specification 427,494 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises examples showing the preparation of the esters, viz.. orthoboric acid esters from boric acid and methallyl alcohol tributylborate and furfurylalcohol and ortho silicates from tetraethylsilicate and furfuryl and methallylalcohols. Sodium alcoholate, litharge, calcium and magnesium oxide are used as catalysts in the ester interchange; also the blending of the boron and silicon esters with polyhydric alcohol esters of drying oils and oil-modified alkyd resins. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
