Method of improving the physical properties of inorganic binding agents, mortar and concrete

The physical properties of concretes and mortars are improved, without affecting the density, by the addition of up to 2.5 per cent. of an oxidation product of cellulose waste lye, particularly sulphite waste lye. The product is prepared by (a) the addition of nitric acid to the hot diluted lye until foaming ceases, the liquid being neutralized with lime or evaporated to dryness according as to whether the product is to be used in liquid or dry form or (b) the addition of hydrogen peroxide to the hot diluted lye and evaporating to dryness. The product may be mixed with the dry ingredients or may be added to the gauging water. Setting-regulators, such as alkaline earth, aluminium or heavy metal halides, or alkaline phosphates, and waterproofing materials such as metal hydroxides, colloidal silicic acid, or alkali or alkaline earth silicates, may also be added.
