Algin, alginates and iodine compounds from algae are obtained from seaweeds of the group Phaeophyceae and to the genus Laminaria by crushing the unincencrated algae, macerating in water in which they move in counterflow, the water containing the soluble substances being collected on the one hand and the algae freed from the said soluble substances being collected on the other, and the solution of the soluble substances in water being decanted and evaporated entirely or partly, whilst the said algae that has been freed from the soluble substances are transformed into a paste which is dried and reduced successively to flakes and to a fine powder of algin, all the aforesaid operations being effected continuously. As starting materials fresh or dried algae may be used.ALSO:Algin, alginates and iodine compounds from algae are obtained from seaweeds of the group Phaeophyceae and to the genus Laminaria by crushing the unincinesrated algae, macerating in water in which they move in counter-flow, the water containing the soluble substances being collected on the one hand and the algae freed from the said soluble substances being collected on the other and the solution of the soluble substances in water being decanted and evaporated entirely or partly, whilst the said algae that has been freed from the soluble substances are transformed into a paste which is dried and reduced successively to flakes and to a fine powder of algin, all the aforesaid operations being effected continuously.
