587,295. Work-holders. JACK & HEINTZ, Inc. Nov. 9, 1944, No. 22087. Convention date, Nov. 9, 1943. [Class 83 (iii)] A clamping-device for holding work during a machining operation comprises a base 1 carrying standards 2, 3 provided with pins 5 on which work-gripping levers 6, 7 are pivotally and slidably supported by means of slots 8 therein. Each lever has a jaw 10 pivoted thereto by a screw 11 and normally maintained in a horizontal position by a spring plate 13 riveted to the lever at 12. Springs 23, 24 attached to pins 34 on the levers tend to withdraw the jaws 10 and raise them clear of the work 28, 30, shown as the gimbal of a gyroscope, but when a wedge 20 is forced upwardly between the levers, as shown in Fig. 3, the latter are first rocked about pivots 5 until they engage a stop plate 26 and are then slid outwardly until the jaws are over the work, in which position the levers are clear of the plate 26 and may be rooked further to cause knife-edged projections 33 thereon to clamp the work against the base 1. On withdrawing the wedge 20, the springs 23, 24 rock and slide the levers rapidly to their inner retracted positions, the line of action of the springs being above the pivots 5. The work is located on the base by pins 29. The wedge 20 may be actuated by hand or by a hydraulic cylinder and piston 14 engaging it through a hemi-spherical member 19.
