[Class 146 (iii)] A reservoir pen provided with an air vent has gravity-operated means for sealing the vent when the pen is held with the point uppermost, and a passage communicating between the vent and the reservoir of such size as to permit the passage of air but to inhibit the passage of ink. The air vent 16 communicates by tubes 17 and 18 leading through the pen with a lateral outlet 19 above the reservoir 5. Rods 20, 21, and 22 slide in the tubes with sufficient clearance to allow air to pass but inhibit the passage of ink. In the carrying position, Fig. 1, the rod 20 seals the air vent 16. On movement to the writing position the rods slide so that the air vent is opened, the chamfered end 21a of the rod 21 seats on the end of tube 18 and rod 22 covers the outlet 19 to prevent ink entering. An ink trap 23 in the chamber 6 is provided which can be emptied by unscrewing the end 4. A rotatable ball 11 forms the writing point and in the carrying position it seals the top of the pen.
