[Class 100 (i)] [Also in Group XL] Apparatus for splicing the web from a new roll of paper or other flexible material in a printing, wrapping, winding or other machine to an old web running past it, comprises a control actuator on the under-surface of the new web and means responsive to the movement of the control actuator along the path of the running web to sever the old web immediately behind the splice. Two brushes 38 adjacent the path of the web are connected electrically when a patch 36 of metal foil or metallic paint on the leading end of the new web passes. This operates a relay 40 which energizes a solenoid 42 to project a knife 44 which severs the web running from the old roll 14. The control actuator may be provided on a paster tab T, Fig. 4, of the construction described and claimed in Specification 594,632, and consisting of two parts 28, 29, divided by perforations 30 and adapted to be stuck respectively to the outer surface of the leading end of the new web and to the adjacent surface of the roll, and a part 32 connected to the part 28 near the perforations 30 and adapted to be stuck to the under surface of the web. The part 32 carries the conductive patch 36 and the part 28 is coated with rubber cement 31 which co-operates with a similar coating 45 on the old web to effect the splice in the manner described in Specification 555,707. In a modification a smaller tab consisting of two parts separated by perforations is used, the conductive patch and the rubber cement coating being carried by the web itself. In a further modification the brushes 38 are replaced by a photo-electric scanning device into which light is reflected by the web. A dark patch on the tab or on the web itself reflects little or no light when it passes and thus causes the knife to be projected. Alternatively the light is transmitted through the web instead of being reflected by it. Specification 572,659 also is referred to.
