680,203. Agglutinated fibrous sheet materials; laminated materials. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST. GOBAIN, CHAUNY & CIREY. Nov. 18, 1948. [Nov. 18, 1947] No. 30011/48. Class 140. Fibre-reinforced plastic sheets are made by winding glass or other artificial fibres 2, as soon as they are drawn, e.g. from nozzles 1 supplied with molten material in parallel relationship on a drum 3 rotating on a shaft 4, and applying a plastic material over the entire periphery of the individual fibres either during or before winding on the drum, e.g. by means of atomisers 5. Multilayer materials may be obtained by winding superposed layers on the drum without interruption. The drum 3 or the fibre-producing nozzles 1 may be oscillated in the direction of the shaft 4. The band of drawn fibres may form only a part of the axial length of the drum, complete coverage of the drum being obtained by relative movement of the nozzles and drum. When the binder has set sufficiently, the thin layer formed on the drum is cut axially or helically and removed from the drum. Further impregnating material may be applied while the thin layer is still on the drum or after it has been removed. The binder may be thermoplastic or thermosetting, e.g. a polyster, a phenol-, or urea-aldehyde resin, and may be given a greater affinity for glass fibres by adding triethanolamine or an alkaline sulphoricinate. A number of the thin sheets may be superposed with the fibres parallel or crossing and hot-pressed.
