Textile yarns are sized by treating with an aqueous solution containing as the sole sizing agent an ammonium or alkali metal salt of a copolymer of styrene or a substituted styrene with maleic anhydride. Substituted styrenes specified are methyl, butyl and chloro-styrenes. Minor amounts of vinyl acetate, chloride, ethyl ether, methyl ketone, indene and acrylic esters may be copolymerized with the styrene and maleic anhydride.ALSO:Textile yarns are sized by treating with an aqueous solution containing as the sole sizing agent an ammonium or alkali metal salt of a copolymer of styrene or a substituted styrene with maleic anhydride, from 2 to 15 per cent of the salt being deposited, the yarns thereafter being dried by heating, preferably at 200-300 DEG F. The solution is preferably kept at 150-200 DEG F. Yarns specified are cotton, viscose, cellulose acetate, nylon, glass, linen, flax, hemp, jute, ramie, wool, silk and vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer.
