Copper, zinc or cadmium derivatives of 8-quinolinol, 5 : 7-dibrom-8-quinolinol and 5 : 7-dichlor-8-quinolinol are precipitated on the surfaces of an inert filler by mixing and agitating a copper, zinc or cadmium salt such as the acetate or nitrate with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble acid salt of the 8 quinolinol in the presence of the inert filler. The resulting 8-quinolinolate has a particle size within the range of 0.1 to 10 microns. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the preparation of bismuth, iron, cobalt and nickel derivatives. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Seeds are treated with a mixture of copper, zinc or cadmium derivatives of 8 quinolinol, 5-7 dibrom- or 5-7 dichlor-8 quinolinol having a particle size of 0.1 to 10 microns, and a liquid or finely divided solid such as pyrophyllite, talc, fuller's earth or bentonite. Insecticides such as D.D.T., nicotine or lead arsenate may also be added. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also compositions containing manganese, bismuth, iron, cobalt and nickel derivatives and to the treatment of seeds with one of the metal 8 quinolinolates admixed with low fat content soyabean flour at a ratio of 1 to 5 ounces of the composition per bushel of seeds. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
