The gouging jet hole g may be directed backwards at about 20 degrees to the vertical and lies approximately in a vertical plane parallel to the line of travel. A heating nozzle a having a series of jet holes b moves in advance of the nozzle d. The nozzles a and d may be separate or combined and the nozzle d may be provided with independent heating jets and with an additional jet hole directing oxygen forward at an angle to the line of cut to give a square cut to the plate f prior to bevelling and gouging.
