[Class 1351 [Also in Group XXVII] In an internal-combination engine having a generator 14, Fig. 8, charging a battery 16 through a charging cut-out 17, an extra-air valve comprising a plunger 37, Fig. 1, seating on a washer 39, is raised by a lowresistance holding coil 24 and high-resistance boost coil 25 to allow air controlled by a manually rotatable sleeve 43 to flow through a pipe 41 connected by a flexible tube to the induction pipe. An armature plate 30 pivoted at 31, is urged by a spring 32 against a stop 35, causing a pivoted plate 47 to open contacts 52, 54 in the boost coil circuit 25. At idling, the cut-out 17 is open and the current flowing through the holding coil 24 is insufficient to raise the valve 37. As speed increases, the cut-out 17 closes and finally the current in the coil 24 causes the plate 30 to be attracted by a pole-piece 26, when the arm 47 closes contacts 52, 54, causing the boost coil 25 to lift the plunger 37 and admit extra air. A tappet 55, lifted by the plunger 37, raises the arm 47 to break the contacts 52, 54, putting the boost coil out of action, the plunger 37 being then held up by the holding coil 24 alone. If the speed drops nearly to idling, the armature 30 is released and the tappet 55 and plunger 37 drop under their own weight to cut off the extra air, but a leg 50 on the plate 47 contacts the armature 30 and prevents re-closing of the contacts 52, 54 until armature 30 is again attracted by the polepiece 26, the voltage at which this occurs being controlled by the spring 32 and adjustment of the stop 35. A switch 66 short-circuits the coil 24 when closed and prevents opening of the valve 37, and the generator field winding 68 is energized through a constant voltage regulator 67.
