[Classes 110(iii) and 122(iii)] The efficiency of a thermal power plant comprising a steam generator 1 having a combustion chamber supplied with combustion.air at a pressure greater than four atmospheres by a compressor 7 driven by a gas turbine 6 operated by the combustion gases from the generator 1, a useful output steam turbine 10 and a useful output gas turbine 9 also operated by the combustion gases from the generator 1 is improved by the following features in combination (a) providing the compresser 7 with intercoolers 18, 19 (b) using the exhaust gases from the turbine 9 to preheat the compressed combustion air in a heat exchanger 20 (c) using the heat obtained by cooling the turbine 6 to heat the feed water, and (d) using steam extracted from the turbine 10 to heat the feed water in the heaters 13, 14. The gas turbine 6 is cooled by providing the casing and guide blades and rotor with passages through which the feed water flows. If desired, a special cooling medium may be used to cool the rotor. This cooling medium is circulated by a pump 15 through the rotor and feed water heater 12. The preheated feed water is passed to the generator 1 through a steam and water separator 16. The steam from the generator 1 may be superheated in a superheater 8 located between the gas turbines 6 and 9. The turbines 9 and 10 may drive separate electric generators 11.
