627,448. Sawing. BIGWOOD & SON, Ltd., J., and TINLEY, E. L. May 29, 1947, No. 14266. [Class 145(ii)] A machine for severing endwise moving stock 25 comprises a primary carriage 16 mounted on a bed 10 for movement parallel to the path of travel of the stock and having means 45 for gripping the stock, clutchcontrolled means for driving the said carriage in the same direction as the stock, a secondary carriage 40 mounted on the primary carriage for movement transverse to that of the stock and carrying a powerdriven severing tool 48 (e.g. a saw), together with mechanical means on the bed and on the secondary carriage for imparting the said transverse movement to the secondary carriage during the forward motion of the primary carriage. The said mechanical means may comprise a substantially triangular cam 55, 56, the part 56 being detachably mounted on the bed, and a roller 54 on the secondary carriage. Moving stock 25, e.g. metal bar or plate, on contacting the flag switch 24 energises a solenoid (not shown) causing the clutch 22 to drive the pinion 15 in engagement with a rack 30 on the underside of the primary carriage 16 and so move this carriage forward parallel to the stock. A roller 54 carried by the secondary carriage 40 engages the slot 59 of a triangular cam 55, 56, giving to the secondary carriage and cutter 48 a transverse motion towards the stock to sever it, followed by a transverse withdrawal as the roller 54 moves along the slot 57. At the extremity of the forward motion of the carriage 16, the roller 54 operates a limit switch (not shown) to disengage the clutch, and the carriage returns to its initial position under the action of compressed air in the cylinder 35 carried by the carriage 16 and having a hollow piston rod 33 attached to the bed 10 at 34 and through which compressed air enters the cylinder. The roller 54 may be kept in engagement with the operative face of the cam by a pneumatic buffer the cylinder 62 of which is carried by the primary carriage whilst the piston rod 64 is connected to the secondary carriage. The stock is gripped during the forward motion of the primary carriage by pneumatically operated clamps 45 on either side of the cutter 48. These are operated to grip the work-piece when the flag switch 24 is actuated to put its circuit into operation and operate a valve to admit air to the top of the cylinder 44 thus bringing down the upper members 45, 46 of the clamp. The clamps are released when the roller 54 operates the limit switch at the termination of the forward movement of the primary carriage, the air valve then admitting air to the bottom of the cylinder 44 to raise the members 45, 46.
