638,335. Coking processes: KOPPERS CO., Inc. Feb. 9, 1948, No. 3773. Convention date, Feb. 18, 1947. [Class 55 (i)] " Expanding " coals, which exert excessive pressures against the oven walls during coking in horizontally elongated ovens, are mixed with a small quantity of pitch and a stratum of non- coking or non-agglomerating fuel is disposed along a surface of the charge which is kept stationary, maximum pressures developing during coking thereby being limited to about 2 lb. per sq. in. on the walls. An oven charge 2 comprising an expanding coal pulverized so that 93.3 per cent passes through a # in. screen mixed with 10 per cent of coal-tar pitch is capped by a 7 in. deep layer 24 of coke breeze or pieces of mixed or larger sizes. In an example during coking at a flue temperature of 2462‹ F., a maximum pressure of 1.29 lb. per sq. in. was reached. Specification 630,128 is referred to.
