Antibiotic agents are obtained by growing one or more parasitic fungi such as rusts, smuts, mildews or moulds on a culture medium containing a nutrient carbohydrate and active and undegenerated chlorophyll or chlorophyllin, such as chlorophyll A, chlorophyll B and the sodium-magnesium, sodium-iron and sodium-copper chlorophyllins. In a preferred method a nutrient solution containing malt, syrup, sodium sulphate and sodium-magnesium chlorophyllin is sterilized by boiling for 2-3 minutes and after cooling is preferably irradiated with infra-red light. The solution is then inoculated with Penicillium glaucum and is kept at 75 DEG F. At the close of fermentation the solution may be filtered through charcoal with adjustment of pH before or after filtration and then crystallized in trays at 150-175 DEG F. or spray dried at 175-185 DEG F. At the close of fermentation the solution may be filtered through charcoal and after adjustment of pH may be spray-dried at 175-185 DEG F or crystallized in trays at 150-175 DEG F. The resulting product may be dissolved in a phenolized solution of gelatin together with phenol-oxyquinoline sulphate and colloidal lead iodide to give an injection solution which may be kept without refrigeration.
