639,225. Games of skill. FARLOW, H. W., and JACKSON, G. W., Aug. 12, 1947, No. 22332- [Class 132 (ii)] [Also in Group XVIII] In a coin-freed amusement apparatus, a hollow steel ball 9, normally lying at the bottom of a forward compartment of a casing 8, is under the influence of an electromagnet 15 behind a partition 8c ; insertion of a coin energizes the magnet which is then traversed over the partition by manipulation of a handle 21a in an endeavour to convey the ball past hazards 11 to a basket 10. In Fig. I the electromagnet 15 is carried at the upper end of a lazy-tongs 20 mounted on an operating spindle 21 carried in a swivel bearing 22. Cables 23 connected to the outer ends of the two lowermost links of the lazy-tongs are wound about and secured to the operating spindle so that, by turning the spindle by means of its handle 21a, the lazy-tongs is extended against return springs 24 to raise the electromagnet 15 and ball 9, whilst rocking the operating spindle sideways in its bearing 22 enables the magnet to be moved sideways to negotiate the ball past the hazards and into the basket 10. In Fig. 2 the lazy-tongs is mounted to rock on a fixed pivot 28 passing through the cross-over point of the lowermost links. The operating spindle with its handle 21a, projects forwardly and is journalled in a bearing block mounted .to rock on the pivot 28. A pinion on the spindle engages arcuate racks 20d, 20f secured to the lowermost links of the lazy-tongs which can therefore be extended by turning the handle 21a and traversed laterally by rocking the handle about the pivot 28 of the spindle bearing block. In both constructions the hazards 11 are discs of flattened dome-like formation and are separated by gaps 13, just sufficient to allow the ball to be passed between an adjacent pair. The apparatus may incorporate a plurality of balls and electromagnets mounted for movement as described, in order to permit simultaneous operation by several players.
