[Class 46] Oil is separated from bilge and ballast water on board ship in a vessel comprising three compartments into the middle - one of which (G, Fig. 2) the mixture is forced under pressure at 16. Oil rises through an intermediate baffle screen, 46 of wide mesh and through an aperture 29 in a partition 14 to an upper compartment H, where it is heated by steam passing through a coil 30, Fig. 3, and passes out at 34. The water passes from G down a central tube 25 into a lower compartment F, where it flows in series through a number of ring-shaped chambers 24 defined by pairs of cylindrical screens 20, 22, finally overflowing a screen 26 and leaving by a pipe 18. Oil from the chambers 24 rises by pipes 28, which traverse the compartment G, to the upper compartment H. A float valve 36 at the top to release air when the vessel is first filled, test-cocks 42 for each compartment, and a bottom exhaust 48 for removing any solid deposit, are provided.
