644,715. Making upholstery springs. SPUHL, E., and SPUHL, J. April 27, 1948, No. 11526. [Class 83 (iv)] A machine for knotting upholstery springs and offsetting the turn of the spring next to the end loop and adjacent the knot comprises jaws 27, 28, Fig. 8a, for gripping the spring F, a knotting-wheel 9, Figs. 1 and 3, arranged on a swinging frame 1, and a rotatable plug 13 fitting into the wheel 9 and having, like the wheel, a radial notch 15 in which the end loop of the spring is gripped by a lug 15SP1/SP on the plug. The end loop and the next turn of the spring F are held by the jaws 27, 28 on a platform 26 which is attached to the base of the machine. The frame 1 is pivotallymounted at 2 in a cradle 3 supported on the base which also carries a cam-shaft 4 having cams 5, 6, 7 and a pinion 8 mounted thereon. The frame 1 receives the shaft 4 in an opening therein and has rollers 21, 22 adapted to follow the cams 5, 6. The cam 7 is connected through a spring-loaded pivotal quandrant-pinion 16 with a pinion 12 integral with the plug 13. At the end of the plug opposite the pinion 12, the wheel 9 is held in position by a cover 11 having a projection 11SP1/SP. A pawl 25 actuated by a cam (not shown) on the shaft 4 is adapted to lock the wheel 9. In operation, as the camshaft 4 is turned in the direction Q, Fig. 2, the rise r-s on the cam 6 causes the frame 1 to move from a neutral position in the direction P, the projection 11SP1/SP to bend the end 29 of the spring as in Fig. 8b, and the notch 15 to receive the end loop of the spring. As the part s-t of the cam 6 passes the follower 22, the cam 7 rotates the plug 13 through a quarter of a revolution to bring the lug 15SP1/SP into the vertical plane and prevent the spring from being withdrawn from the slot 15. The fall t-u of the cam 6 and the corresponding rise y-z on the cam 7 cause the frame 1 to move a small amount in the direction of the neutral position and a joggle fSP1/SP to be bent in the turn of the spring next to its end loop. The latter movement of the frame engages the pinion 8 with the teeth on the wheel 9, which is then released by the pawl 25 and turned to wrap the end 29 around the end turn and so form the knot. The pawl 25 then engages the wheel 9 as the last rise on the cam 5 moves the frame 1 back into the neutral position, and the cam 7 turns the plug into the neutral position.
