An arc welding electrode for deep penetration welding of non-austenitic steel, e.g. in making unbevelled butt, filler &c. welds has a coating containing cryolite in proportion of 5 to 30 per cent by weight of dry powder with a silicate binder and oxides and silicates. A high rate of transfer across the arc is thus produced and if the welding is arrested by raising the arc voltage, lateral dissipation of the stream is prevented by using a core with a higher melting point than the coating, e.g. by increasing the coating thickness or by including refractory oxides. One example of coating for a steel wire used to form an overall diameter of not less than .25 inches on an 8 gauge wire comprises cryolite 5-20 parts, quartz 10-20 parts, silicate, e.g. mica or china clay 10-20 parts, ferro-manganese 15-35 parts, rutile 0-15 parts, iron ore, e.g magnetic and/or silicate 10-30 parts with an alkaline silicate binder.
