[Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] A resistive load RL is supplied with D.C. from a condenser C1 connected in series with a valve V1 across the winding W1 of a transformer supplied with A.C. The valve acts as a half-wave rectifier, and the load voltage is varied by altering the voltage applied to the control grid of the valve from a potentiometer R1 supplied from transformer winding W2. The control voltage may be direct, and the variation may be in amplitude, phase or sign. The circuit may be used to control electric discharge lamps, the load resistance RL being a D.C. winding on a saturable inductor in the lamp circuit.
