[Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XL (b)] In a synchrotron or betatron-synchrotron particle accelerator in which electrons or positive ions accelerated to a velocity close to that of light have their energy further increased by means of an electric field produced across the gap of a resonant transmission line, the line conductors include in the space between them a region inside the envelope so that the dielectric constant between the conductors is determined principally or wholly by the medium within the envelope. The resonant transmission line may comprise concentric cylinders located inside, Fig. 11, or outside, Fig. 12, the envelope proper. In Fig. 11, the cylinders comprise coatings 102, 103 on recessed and re-entrant portions of the envelope wall. In Fig. 12, the cylinders 121, 122 may comprise metallic coatings on insulating formers. In another embodiment, Fig. 9, the resonant transmission line comprises a hollow cylindrical conductor 81 inside the envelope 82, and a pair of parallel strip conductors 86, 87 outside the envelope. The conductor 81 may comprise a metallic coating on an insulating former. The Specification also comprises a resonant transmission line in which the conductors are coatings on the inner and outer surfaces of the envelope wall, the envelope wall entirely filling the space between the conductors. A portion of the outer coating is removed to leave a longitudinally-extending strip relatively isolated from the remainder of the coating. The length of the strip is chosen to match the resonator to the energy input transmission line which is connected between the strip and the remainder of the coating. Another portion of the outer conductor may be removed to provide a window whose opening may be adjusted by means of a slidable shutter for tuning purposes. Specifications 585,992 and 622,148 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a resonant transmission line in which the inner conductor 144, Fig. 13 (Cancelled), is a coating on the inner wall of the envelope and the outer conductor 145 is shaped to enclose a large part of the space between the magnetic polepieces 140, 141. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
