[Class 107] [Also in Group I] Apparatus for distributing grit and the like on roads comprises a vehicle with a container 1 supplying grit to a hopper 2 as in Specification 637,444, means being provided for grading the grit and delivering it in successive streams of increasingly fine size one behind the other with respect to the forward movement of the vehicle. The hopper is lagged with heat - insulating material and its front and rear walls have downwardlyextending perforated baffle plates 6 inclined towards the centre of the hopper. Pivoted on a shaft 7 is an inclined distributing tray 8 having an imperforate section 9 and two screens 10, and 11 the lower screen 10 being of coarser mesh than the preceding screen. The tray may be vibrated or oscillated and its leading edge is urged downwardly by springs 13. Burners 15 mounted in the hopper and supplied with fuel from a pipe 16 serve to dry the grit falling through the hopper. Two pivotally mounted members 17. 18, Fig. 3, operated by a handle 19 are provided to vary the width of the stream discharged from the tray. Means for spraying tar in front of the grit may be provided, the tar sprayer 20 being supplied from a tank mounted on the vehicle. The bottom 8 of the tray is then wholly imperforate and a separate screening member 21 is provided. Grit may be discharged from the container 1 on to conveyers discharging into the hopper and forming a unit with the hopper and distributer. Specification 656,018, [Group I], also is referred to.
