[Classes 94(i) and 125(ii)] An apparatus for filling containers with pastes or creams wherein the paste &c. is mechanically fed into a reservoir 1 from which it passes through a filling head 2 to which the container is held, the container being partially evacuated, the supply of the paste &c. to the reservoir is controllable, as by an operator-operated valve 4 in the supply pipe 3 whereby, whilst the rate of supply may be kept sufficiently high, waste and smearing of the sides of the container as it is moved off the head, due to the paste &c. continuing to extrude from the head after the container has been moved, may be avoided, the rate of flow to the reservoir being controlled by the operator according, inter alia, to the viscosity of the paste &c. The sides of the reservoir may be of glass or transparent plastic or a window thereof may be provided to facilitate inspection of the rate of flow. The filling head may comprise a nozzle 17, Fig. 2, having an internal pipe 16 with a longitudinal groove 18 by which the container C is put into communication with the suction pipe 5. The moutn of the container seats on a rubber ring 20 let into an annulus screwed to the nozzle and replaceable by one of different size to accommodate different containers. The flow of paste &c. from the reservoir is throttled by an apertured disc 23 which is removable for replacement by one of different sized aperture. In the form shown in Fig. 7 wherein the lower portion of the reservoir is conical a needle valve 29 serves as the throttling member and is movable from the fully closed position 30 to a position 31 wherein the supply is substantially unobstructed; the valve rod 27 passes up wardly through the top cover of the reservoir and its upper end is calibrated to indicate the amount of throttling.
