[Class 4] [Also in Group XXIV] Shafts 12, 13 operating the flaps, dive-brakes, spoilers, &c. of an aircraft through gearing and linkwork or screw - jack means (not shown), are driven by a bevel gear 10 which is rotated by the axial movement of a fluid-operated piston 6, to an adjustable extent determined by the length of the cylinder 1. The piston 6 is fast with a tube 7 having an external thread engaged by the thread of a member 8 integral with a fixed tube 81, and an internal thread co-operating with a screwed rod 9 carrying the gear 10. The end wall 3 of the cylinder 1 is adjustably secured thereto by a screw-thread and has in or adjacent to it a port 5 for admission of the operating fluid. A further port 4 is provided, adjacent the fixed end wall 2 of the cylinder. A sleeve 17 secured to the piston prevents contact between the fluid and the tube 7. A sleeve 16 secured to the cylinder 1 is integral with or attached to a housing 14 containing bearings 15 for the end of the rod 9, said housing also containing gearing comprising the bevel wheel 10 meshing with. bevel pinions on the shafts 12, 13.
