630,981. Ignition compositions; blasting fuzes. GOLDSMITH, P. A. H., and HEATERS, Ltd. Nov. 22, 1946, No. 34672. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] An igniter for combustible gas producing charges or heating mixtures of blasting cartridges containing gas under pressure comprises a mixture of a combustible organic carbon compound and potassium perchlorate, the carbon content of the compound being between SP1/SP/ 5 and SP4/SP/ 5 of its molecular weight and in amount sufficient to satisfy the available oxygen of the perchlorate, the compound being non-hygroscopic, solid at atmospheric temperature and capable of comminution to permit intimate mixture with the perchlorate, the mixture being in the form of a fuze or match head or contained in a combustible, e.g. paper container, either form having a fuze wire, resistance say 1500-2000 ohms per yard, embedded therein. The carbon compound may be a fatty acid such as stearic or palmitic acids, a salt of a dibasic acid such as potassium bitartrate, a carbohydrate such as cane sugar, lactose or cellulose, a salt or anhydride of an aromatic acid such as potassium hydrogen phthalate, potassium benzoate, or phthalic anhydride, a phenol such as thymol, or an aldehyde such as metaldehyde, or mixtures of any of these ; the barium or strontium salts may be used in place of those of potassium. Finely divided metals and/or endothermic salts such as ammonium oxalate, zinc sulphate, or sodium bicarbonate may be added to the mixture. Specifications 413,823, 480,330 and 560,227 are referred to.
