663,098. Preserving proteins. SHERWINWILLIAMS CO. Nov. 22, 1948 [Dec. 22, 1947], No. 30308/48. Class 49 For retarding putrefaction, proteins or proteinaceous materials are dissolved in aqueous alkaline solution, to this solution is added a protein preservative soluble in alkaline, but insoluble in neutral or acid, solution, e.g. chlorobenzoic acid, bromobenzoic acid, salicylic acid, phenol, orthophenylphenol, 2,4, 5-trichlorophenol, 2, 3, 4, 6-tetrachlorophenol, pentachlorophenol, or 2 halo, 4- phenylphenol, and an aqueous acid solution is then added to precipitate at least some of the protein and preservative. An example is concerned with treating castor bean protein by solubilizing in sodium hydroxide solution of pH 11, adding sufficient tetrachlorophenol to result in an 11 per cent. concentration thereof in the protein subsequently precipitated, adding sufficient 5 per cent. sulphuric acid solution to attain pH 3À9, and filtering off the excess liquid, the resulting product consisting of 75 per cent of acidified water and 25 per cent. of protein and preservative. Specification 657,509, [Group IV(b)], and U.S.A. Specification 2,502,484 are referred to.
