In a means for admitting ballast into a ship, for admitting cooling water to a ship's engines, or for similar purposes, a strainer in the form of a perforated container a which projects into a watertight chamber or box h on the inboard side of a hole e in the shell plating f of a ship, one end of the container a being open and being fixed in the inner end o of the chamber or box h which is below the waterline, the perforations b in the container are wholly or mainly provided in its side wall or walls so that their combined area is greater than the area of the hole e. The container is connected to a pipe m leading to the pump. The side walls of the watertight chamber or box h are welded to the shell plating at p, one wall being of flat plating attached to the web of a member r supporting the shell plating.
