669,353. Severing by tearing. LAMSON PARAGON SUPPLY CO., Ltd. (Moore Business Forms, Inc.). April 28, 1949, No. 11327/49. Class 31 (i). A machine for feeding continuous strips and severing the strips along longitudinally-spaced transverse lines is provided with a plurality of strip-feeding means spaced longitudinally of the strip path, means whereby the strip is fed first by one of said feeding means and then by another so that the combined action produces a continuous feeding of the strip, and additional feed means spaced from the first-mentioned feed means and operating so as to apply tension to the portion of the strip between the two sets of feed means so as to sever the strip transversely against a blade located between the two sets of feed means and adapted to engage the strip at a transversely weakened line thereof. As shown in Fig. 4, strip material S is fed to two pairs of feed rolls 17, 18, and 19, 20, and past a severing member 67 to a pair of snatch rolls 48, 50 which rotate at a higher speed than the feed rolls. The material is torn, along weakened lines, against the edge of member 67, the tear originating simultaneously at opposite sides of the strip and being completed in the centre. The feed rolls 18, 20, Fig. 6, have depressed portions 35, 36, along their surfaces so that although the strip is fed continuously, each pair of rolls feeds intermittently. The rolls are driven by a motor 56 through a chain 60. A guide 73 is provided to guide material from the feed rolls into the grip of the snatch rolls, which latter rolls are adjustable longitudinally of the machine.
