A concrete pile is cast in situ by sinking the bottom of the lowest part 6 of a three-part hopper and tubular member into the ground, sealing off each part from the other by means of hatches 8 . . . 11, supplying air pressure to the sunk part (which contains reinforcement 39) to drive out any water, supplying concrete to the hopper part 7, equalising pressures between the top and middle parts 7, 2 by opening hatch 10, passing the concrete to the middle part by opening hatch 8, reclosing batches 8, 10, equalising pressures between the middle and lowest parts 2, 6 by opening hatch 11, allowing the concrete to drop to the bottom of part 6 by opening hatch 9, reclosing hatches 9, 11 and tamping the concrete by a motor or manually operated hammer head 33.
