Shortly before the slurcock 4 acts on the first sinker jack 1, a comb 10 is rocked to lower springs 9, which it carries, from position C to position D. The spring ends are subsequently lifted seriatim, by a roller 18 travelling with the slurcock, to. allow rocking of the jacks from position A to position B. As each spring comes off the roller, its free end slides on to the inclined face 7 of a projection 6 on the corresponding jack, reaching position F immediately before the end of the sinking movement (and at a time corresponding to the steepest part of the slurcock face). Just before the return of the jacks to position A, the springs are returned to position C. The roller 18 is carried at the end of a pivoted lever 17 rocked, before the end of each traverse, by an abutment 21 ; and is located by stop pins or screws 19.
