Method of simultaneous control of diseases and delays in the growth of potato sprouts during storage

Potato tubers are preserved under storage conditions by p treatment with a chlorinated mononitrobenzene containing at least three chlorine substituents and free from other substituents e.g. pentachloronitrobenzene, 2 : 3 : 5 : 6-tetrachloro-1-nitrobenzene and 1:2:4-trichloro-5-nitrobenzene. The active material may be applied as a vapour, in admixture with an inert diluent e.g. slate powder, china clay or talcum powder, or as a solution or dispersion in an inert (non-phytocidal) solvent or dispersing medium. The active substance is applied at the rate of 4 to 32 ounces per ton of potato tubers. Preferably the tubers are treated immediately after lifting and are then stored for at least one month in a substantially enclosed condition.ALSO:Compositions for combating disease in potatoes under storage conditions contain as active ingredient a chlorinated mononitrobenzene containing at least three chlorine substituents and free from other substituents, e.g., pentachloronitrobenzene, 2 : 3 : 5 : 6-tetrachloro 1-nitrobenzene and 1 : 2 : 4-trichloro 5-nitrobenzene.
