Class 126 A front for an open fire grate comprises an adjustable ash pit door to regulate the ingress of air, a transverse grid or grate bar unit above the level of the grate bottom and a plate which masks the front of the grate bar unit in one position to obstruct the ingress of air through the front grate bars and, in another position, uncovers the grate bars and serves a a trivet. A grate bar unit 15 is mounted between the upwardly and rearwardly sloping side cheeks 10a of a fire front. The lower part of the front has an ash pit opening defined by a forwardly projecting flange 10b and closed by a hinged door 12 provided with an arcuate spring metal strip 14 to hold it in any desired position. A trivet 18 is hinged on pins 18a engaging between recesses formed at the lower edge of the grate bar unit 15 and the fire front proper. The trivet can be swung about the pins 18a to close the front of the fire grate. Lugs 15d, 15e are provided on the grate bar unit to secure it to the side cheeks 10a, and the bottom bars of the grate respectively. The bottom part of the ash pit door flange may be omitted and an arcuate extension of the ashpit door may replace the arcuate metal spring 14.
