684,157. Spray carburetters. ETHYL CORPORATION. July 18, 1949 [Oct. 7, 1948; Nov. 20, 1948], Nos. 18843/49 and 18844/49. Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii). The addition of an anti-knock liquid, which may comprise additional fuel to produce an over-rich mixture, a fuel of higher anti-knock value than the 'normal fuel, or an anti-knock substance such as aniline, to the combustible mixture is controlled by a valve actuated in accordance with the sum of the effects of intake manifold suction and the suction at the throat of the carburetter Venturi. In Fig. 5 the normal fuel is fed through a nozzle 137 and the anti-knock liquid flows to a nozzle 122 past a valve 134 actuated by diaphragms 117, 118 subjected respectively to the intake manifold and Venturi suctions, the total force on the two diaphragms being arranged to allow the valve toi open only during detonating periods. In a modification the pressure responsive device actuates two valves simultaneously so that the flow of the normal fuel is reduced when the flow of the high anti-knock value fuel is started, the two fuels flowing to a single nozzle. In Fig. 4, a valve 13 controlling an orifice 9 in parallel with the usual metering jet 4 is actuated by the pressure-responsive device 10 to increase. the supply of normal fuel to the nozzle 7 to produce an over-rich mix-, ture during detonating periods. The jet 4 is controlled by a rod 5 actuated from the throttle valve.
